And I have been presuming that you also have Anti-Virus software installed. After all, there is plenty of malware out there that would like to use your PC to distribute SPAM, collect your banking information, and/or control your web browsing.
But I was wrong!
In addition to receiving an email this week concerning a machine that was infected after the user let their Anti-Virus expire, I also glanced at another friend’s PC and noticed Windows was warning him that he had no Anti-Virus software installed! Shocked, I asked him if he really wasn’t running Anti-Virus software, and if he would like me to install some. He said sure – but then asked if it was going to cost money…
I pointed out to him that without Anti-Virus software he would get infected, perhaps rendering his PC useless. In which case he may have to get a new copy of Windows and pay to have someone set up his machine again from scratch, in addition to probably loosing all the files he had failed to back up (which happens all too frequently).
My wife pointed out that perhaps he doesn’t realize viruses are all that prevalent or nasty. After all, who, after losing their PC to a virus, announces it from the rooftop for all the world to hear? Nobody does. They know they should keep their Anti-virus up to date, but they are too embarrassed when it happens and keep hush about it.
So, here’s what I suggest. The next time you are near a friend’s PC, ask them “out of curiosity” what Anti-Virus software they use. If they admit to being
