I recently read an article on the Dangers of Distracted Pedestrians, and, as is often the case, my mind wandered off onto other creative ideas.
The article told about a bill pending in the New York legislature’s transportation committee that would ban the use of iPods while crossing the street. The goal was to reduce the number of pedestrian accidents. Of course there are bills too that would address distracted bicycling, in addition to various forms of distracted driving that have made the news.
It instantly occurred to me that the readers of this blog could collectively work together to create a risk free world. Let’s try it! All we need to do is think of everything that can go wrong, and sculpt a corresponding law that would make the activity leading to that mishap illegal. Submit your contributions as comments to this post, and periodically I will forward them to our legislators…
You should consider the wording of your proposed legislation carefully. We wouldn’t want to inadvertantly make it illegal for deaf people to cross the street. Nor would we want to let those careless iPod users circumvent the law by carrying a red and white cane to indicate they are not watching where they are headed. Hmmm...
What do you think?

I read an article a year or two ago about a senator or some such who wanted to force pedestrians in crosswalks to yield the right of way to motor vehicles. His logic was simply: "Pedestrians are dangerous."
