A crude oil supplier wants to run a pipeline from Canada to Texas, and some folks are protesting it.
That pipeline runs through our state and neighboring states. It has raised concerns in Nebraska because it might run through an area that is a source of water for much of the state.
Some environmentalists point out that if the oil pipeline were to spring a leak it would contaminate a lot of water, which indeed could be disasterous. Accidents do happen. And it is wise to be careful.
But the environmentalists admit they would complain about the pipeline no matter where it is routed. They simply do not want a pipeline, and are using the potential for water contamination to motivate others to oppose it.
I have questions for environmentalists that oppose a pipeline no matter where it is routed. Would they rather the crude be shipped by truck? That would be more harmful to the environment than a temporary leak. Or are they hoping to eliminate the use of oil entirely?
If they want to eliminate oil altogether, then I would like to see them ride a bicycle everywhere they go. And they also should not be using anything made of plastic, since plastic is a petroleum product. Basically, they need to put their feet where their mouth is. Otherwise, I seriously doubt they understand what they are asking for.
